Santa Cruz Wedding Photography

A Santa Cruz wedding,
redwoods + Pacific.

Six venues, Capitola sunsets, Henry Cowell redwoods, the September secret. Multi-aesthetic galleries 1.5 hours from SF.

Santa Cruz is the rare wedding region where you can shoot beach and redwood in the same hour. Capitola pastel cottages + 100-ft redwood groves at Henry Cowell + Pasatiempo hilltop villa — all within a 30-minute radius.

It is also a college town and surf town, which means hotel inventory is tight on summer weekends. Book early, pick September, and combine venues.

September. Combine beach + redwood. Skip foggy mornings.

When fog will ruin your sunset.

May–August

Marine-layer fog peaks. Mornings socked-in. Capitola + downtown clear by mid-afternoon. Henry Cowell redwoods get filtered light all day (great).

September–October

Best months. Indian summer, no fog, warm Pacific water. Top recommendation.

November–April

Clear, cool, occasional storm. Redwood ceremonies are stunning in winter rain (covered).

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Beach or redwoods?+
Both. Best Santa Cruz weddings combine them — ceremony at Capitola or Davenport Beach, dinner reception under redwoods at Sand Rock Farm or Hollins House. The 30-min radius lets you do multi-aesthetic galleries that nowhere else can match.
What about the boardwalk?+
Iconic but not a wedding venue per se. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk works for engagement sessions + portrait stops + after-party (private buyouts available, $5K+). Most Santa Cruz weddings use the boardwalk as a portrait backdrop, not the main venue.
Permits at Capitola or Davenport?+
Capitola: $200 city permit for ceremonies with chairs/arch, file 30 days out. Couple-only elopements with no setup = no permit. Davenport: free public bluffs, no permit needed unless you bring chairs (then $200 county permit). Henry Cowell: $300 state park permit, 30 ppl max, 30 days out.
How does Hollins House work?+
It is the clubhouse at Pasatiempo Golf Club (1929, MacKenzie-designed). Wedding fee $5K + per-plate dinner ($150–250). Weddings happen on the patio (ceremony + cocktails) and inside the dining room (reception). Books 12+ months out for Saturdays.
Where do guests stay?+
Chaminade ($350–600, on-property if you book Chaminade), Hotel Paradox ($300–500, downtown), Dream Inn ($400–700, beach-front, retro), Capitola Hotel ($250–400, walkable village), Best Western Capitola ($200–350, family-friendly). Plenty of Airbnb in Capitola + Pleasure Point + Westside.
Drive from SF?+
About 1.5 hours via Highway 17 (Santa Cruz Mountains, scenic, occasional traffic). Easier than Big Sur (3 hrs) or Mendocino (3.5 hrs). Easy Saturday-only wedding without overnight, though Friday night arrival is recommended.
How much does a Santa Cruz wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $4,000 for 8-hour Santa Cruz coverage including travel from the Bay Area. Most couples book 10 hours ($5,000–6,500) which covers getting-ready + ceremony + redwood + beach combo + reception. Multi-day weekends with rehearsal coverage $6,500–8,000.
Best month for Santa Cruz?+
September is the local secret. Indian summer, warm Pacific (70°F water), no fog, dahlias in bloom. October second-best. May–August avoid afternoon fog by booking inland venues (Sand Rock Farm, Hollins House) over beach venues (Capitola, Davenport).
