Mexico Destination Wedding

A Mexico wedding,
2.5 hours from LA.

Five regions, six iconic resorts, the cenote ceremonies, the marriage-license shortcut, the hurricane calendar. Bilingual photo team for Mexican-American couples.

Mexico is the most photogenic destination wedding region within 5 hours of California. Cabo cliffs + Sea of Cortez. Riviera Maya cenotes + Caribbean turquoise. Mexico City colonial architecture. San Miguel de Allende UNESCO charm. Tulum bohemian-tropical luxury.

It is also the most cultural-bridge-friendly. Mexican-American couples honor both traditions — lazo, arras, padrinos. AGV is bilingual + has shot many of these. We get the rhythm right.

December–April. Cabo or Riviera Maya. Symbolic ceremony, legal back home.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

Cabo or Riviera Maya — which one?+
Cabo = closer to CA (2.5-hr flight from LAX, 3-hr from SFO), drier, less humid, Pacific. Riviera Maya = farther (4–5-hr flight + transfer), tropical jungle, Caribbean turquoise, cenote ceremonies. For first-time Mexico weddings: Cabo. For unique aesthetic + adventure: Riviera Maya. For shorter total trip + bigger guest count: Cabo.
How does the marriage license work in Mexico?+
Two options: (1) Legal Mexican civil ceremony — requires blood tests in Mexico, lots of paperwork, takes 4–6 weeks lead time. (2) Symbolic ceremony in Mexico + legal civil ceremony in your home state before/after. Option 2 is what 95% of US couples do — saves 4–6 weeks of paperwork. AGV uses option 2 by default.
Hurricane season?+
Pacific (Cabo, Vallarta) hurricane season is May–November, peak August–October. Caribbean (Riviera Maya, Tulum) is June–November, peak August–September. Mitigation: book December–April (highest cost but safest). Or January–May for Caribbean. Get wedding insurance covering weather/travel disruption.
Cenote ceremonies — are they real?+
Yes. Cenotes are natural limestone sinkholes filled with crystal-clear groundwater. Riviera Maya + Yucatan peninsula has 6,000+. Wedding-worthy private cenotes: Cenote Suytun, Cenote Saamal, X'Canche. $1,500–3,000 buyout for 2-hour private use. Most magical aesthetic on the planet.
Should AGV travel from CA?+
Yes. Direct flights from LAX/SFO to Cabo (SJD) 2.5 hrs, Cancun (CUN) 4–5 hrs, Mexico City (MEX) 4 hrs. Travel + 3 nights lodging at-cost included. Passport required. We have shot 4 Mexico weddings since 2022.
Where do guests stay?+
On-property if booking a destination resort (most common — Esperanza, Rosewood Mayakoba, Hard Rock, etc.). Off-property: Cabo Surf Hotel ($300–500), Pueblito de Tulum ($200–400), Hotel Lulu Mexico City ($250–450). Plenty of vacation rentals (especially in Tulum + Cabo).
How much does a Mexico wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $7,500 for 8-hour Mexico coverage including travel from CA + 3 nights lodging. Most couples book 10 hours ($9,000–11,000) which covers ceremony + reception + island-day portrait sesh. Multi-day weekends $10,000–14,000.
Cultural considerations?+
Mexican weddings often blend US + traditional Mexican rituals — lazo (ceremonial bond), arras (13 coins), padrinos sponsoring different aspects. Many CA-Mexican couples honor both. AGV is bilingual + culturally familiar (we shoot 30+ quinceañeras + many Mexican-American weddings/year). We brief Mexican vendors in Spanish + handle the planning bilingually.
