Golden Gate Park is San Francisco's best-kept wedding secret. 1,017 acres, 12 distinct gardens, two glasshouses, a Japanese tea garden, a redwood grove, and a lake with a boathouse — all within one bus ride of City Hall.

It is also weather-volatile. June through August fog rolls in by 11 AM and stays. Pick your season right and the park does the rest.

September–October
Indian summer. 70°F days, no fog, dahlias in bloom. Best months for outdoor ceremonies. Top recommendation.

Depends on group size + budget. <10 guests + budget-friendly = Shakespeare Garden ($150 permit). 10–30 guests + romantic = AIDS Memorial Grove redwoods ($150). Indoor + iconic = Conservatory of Flowers ($3,500+). 30–80 guests + garden ceremony = Botanical Garden Garden of Fragrance ($1,200+). 80+ guests + full reception = Stow Lake Boathouse ($1,500–3,000).
Do we need a permit at Golden Gate Park?+
Yes for any ceremony. SF Recreation & Parks Department (RPD) requires a permit for weddings + commercial photo shoots. $150 base ceremony permit (Shakespeare Garden, AIDS Grove). Higher fees for premium spots (Botanical Garden, Conservatory). File 30+ days out via sfrecpark.org.
When should we get married at GGP?+
September + October are the best months — Indian summer, clear skies, dahlias in bloom, fewer tourists. Skip June–August (foggy + tourist-heavy). November is the underused month — quiet, beautiful japanese maples, lower vendor pricing.
How early do GGP venues book up?+
Botanical Garden + Conservatory: 6–9 months out for Saturdays. Tea Garden + Stow Lake: 4–6 months out. Shakespeare Garden + AIDS Grove: 30 days minimum, 60 days recommended. Friday + Sunday weddings book later than Saturdays.
Can guests park at GGP?+
Limited. Most GGP weddings rely on Lyft/Uber + the underground Music Concourse Garage ($30/day). Free parking on JFK Drive (except Sundays — JFK Drive is car-free Apr–Oct on Sundays). For 30+ guests, recommend they Lyft or take MUNI to the park entrance.
Where do we get ready / where do guests stay?+
Inn at the Presidio ($300–500, 5-min drive), Lodge at the Presidio ($350–600), Hotel del Sol in the Marina ($250–400, 10-min drive), Cliff Hotel at Union Square ($250–400, 15-min drive). For getting-ready space, the Inn at the Presidio is the closest hotel that feels weekend-getaway.
What about a marriage license?+
San Francisco County Clerk (City Hall, room 168). Walk-in, $115, valid for 90 days. Can apply same-day as the ceremony. Confidential license = no witnesses needed; public license = 1 witness (we can witness for couple-only elopements).
How much does a GGP wedding photographer cost?+
AGV starts at $1,800 for 4-hour GGP coverage (ceremony + portraits + walking-to-lunch). Most couples book 6 hours ($2,500–3,500) which adds golden-hour portraits at Lands End or Baker Beach after GGP. Full-day 8-hour weddings $4,500–5,500.
