California Elopement Photography

Planning a California elopement?
Start here.

Locations, permits, timing, and the mistakes most couples make — from a photographer who's shot 200+ weddings + elopements across California.

Elopements aren't second-place weddings. They're the intentional version.

No 150 guests to entertain. No 4 vendors to coordinate. No losing the day you're supposed to be present for because someone's third cousin won't stop asking about parking.

What you actually get: two hours with the person you're marrying, in the most beautiful place in California, with a photographer who knows how to be invisible AND present at the same time.

That's the whole point.

FAQ

Most-asked questions.

What counts as an elopement?+
Any wedding under 30 guests, typically. Some couples elope just the two of them + officiant. Others bring immediate family. Either works — what matters is it feels intimate, not like a small traditional wedding.
Do I need a permit?+
Depends on location. State parks usually require a commercial photo permit ($200-500). National parks (Yosemite, Joshua Tree) have special wedding permits. Beaches, cliffs, private venues = usually no permit. I handle the research + filing.
What about a marriage license?+
California marriage license is valid for 90 days, issued at any county clerk. Confidential license doesn't require witnesses. Public license requires 1 witness. We can walk through the legal side together.
How long should coverage be?+
Minimum 4 hours for an elopement — ceremony + couple portraits + dinner. 6-8 hours if you want getting-ready coverage. Truly just the ceremony? 2 hours works but you'll wish you had more.
Can I still have a "first look" elopement?+
Absolutely. First look elopements are some of my favorite shoots — you get 90 minutes of couple time before any witnesses arrive. Pure intimacy.
What does an elopement photographer cost in California?+
Range is wide. Budget photographers: $800-1,500. Mid-tier: $1,800-3,500. Experienced + destination: $3,500-6,500+. AGV elopement coverage starts at $2,500 for 4 hours.
